“EVERYTHING IS EMOTION”
David O’Brien is a mosaic artist based in rural Lancashire, working under the name Big and Small Mosaics. His journey into mosaic art began in the 1990s following a visit to Antoni Gaudí’s Park Güell, an experience that continues to inform his approach to the medium today.
Working from his studio in Bickerstaffe, David has developed a distinctive contemporary voice within mosaic, producing both wall-based and sculptural works. His practice has led to exhibitions with galleries across the UK, live commissions, and a growing presence in private collections.

“TRUST IN THE PROCESS”
David O’Brien’s mosaics reinterpret familiar cultural icons through hand-cut ceramic tile and glass. Drawing inspiration from music, motorsport, fashion, retro design and urban culture, each piece transforms recognisable imagery into a tactile, modern composition.
Precision, patience, and an ever evolving creative process are central to David’s practice. Every work is entirely unique, often changing and developing during its creation, and is completed to a standard the artist considers worthy of living with himself, a quiet but defining measure of quality and integrity.
